Description

A Quaker career counselor and employment training consultant, Charland shows how to find meaningful work today by asking the right questions—and listening carefully for the answers. The author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Changing Careers (Macmillan, 1998) takes a deeper look here at work—its history, meaning, and current trends. Drawing on his experience, as well as writings from Biblical texts, Quaker, and other religious and literary works, he shares stories of those who have found personal satisfaction in their work and offers practical guidance for the search.

  • "As a midlife career-changer I've read many career-oriented books in the last couple of years. I found this one to be more helpful than most. I enjoyed the chapters on value clarification. The idea of "quieting" resonating with what I feel the need to do within myself. Also, Charland's emphasis on "venturing" is helpful in applying the insights gained through introspection. The real world examples were inspirational. The tone of the book was just right: authoritative without feeling heavy." -Brad Mortensen, Utah

  • Paul Buckley says Life Work is "for anyone who wonders if there might be a better way to live."

  • Read Life Work and let Charland aid you on the path of meshing your call with what others sense needs doing, matching your vocation with your values, and discovering what it is your heart wants.

Right on target: concrete and accessible. May 1, 2009
Reviewer: Stephen.son from Thurmont, MD United States
I really appreciated this book for it's considerations of how the quickly-changing world affects our faith-lives through our work-lives and how we honor different kinds of work unfairly (blue collar vs. white collar). William Charland does a terrific job of balancing academic scholarship with cultural reference in a way that is accessible to a broad audience. Also, this work served me by connecting Friend's vocabulary and practices with terms practices from the wider world of faith,  (ex. Quaker's use of "openings" compared with moments of "Kairos").

Connection November 2, 2007
Reviewer: Rick Stansberger from United States
"The answers we find will appear as a sense of connection." When I read this in Bill Charland's book, Life-Work, my job search snapped into focus, and I began to pay attention to those connections that energize me.
